The Retreat Animal Rescue

Founded in 1989, The Retreat is a not-for-profit sanctuary in Kent providing a safe haven for animals who have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. Operating with a strict no-kill policy, it is currently home to over 1,200 rescued animals, including horses, cows, sheep, goats, exotics, wildlife, and domestic pets. Since opening, The Retreat has saved more than 20,000 lives.

Beyond rescue, The Retreat is committed to education and advocacy, promoting compassion, responsible care, and a vegan lifestyle. All trustees and most volunteers are vegan, and the sanctuary works to raise awareness of sustainable, cruelty-free living.

The site welcomes visitors free of charge and features a café, shop, thrift store, and lodges—all run with a vegan ethos. Personal tours and events help the community connect with the animals and support the charity’s mission. With plans to expand further, The Retreat continues to grow its impact and lifesaving work.

  • The Retreat Animal Rescue & Sanctuary approached us looking for support with their social media management across Instagram and Facebook. They wanted to grow their online presence, raise awareness of their mission, and build stronger engagement with their community of supporters.

With such a wide variety of rescued animals and an inspiring story to tell, they needed consistent, professional content that would showcase their work, connect with followers, and ultimately help drive donations, adoptions, and visitor numbers.

  • Our focus was on creating a consistent and engaging social media presence that reflected The Retreat’s values and highlighted the breadth of their rescue work. We developed a content plan for Instagram and Facebook that combined:

    • Storytelling posts to share the journeys of individual animals and show the real impact of donations.

    • Educational content to raise awareness around animal welfare, veganism, and responsible care.

    • Behind-the-scenes updates to bring supporters closer to the daily life of the sanctuary.

    • Calls-to-action designed to encourage donations, adoptions, volunteering, and event attendance.

We also implemented a cohesive brand look and tone of voice to ensure their content felt polished, recognisable, and aligned with their mission. Alongside organic posting, we supported their community management by strengthening engagement with followers and creating content that inspired sharing and advocacy.

  • Our social media strategy has delivered significant growth and visibility for The Retreat. Their Instagram community has now grown to over 22,000 followers, while their Facebook page has reached an impressive 53,000 followers. Collectively, our content is regularly reaching hundreds of thousands of people, helping to spread awareness of the sanctuary’s mission far beyond Kent.

One of the standout moments was welcoming Diane Morgan (best known for Cunk on Earth and Motherland) to the sanctuary, a high-profile visit that brought fantastic exposure and further strengthened The Retreat’s reputation.

Through consistent storytelling, community engagement, and impactful content, The Retreat’s social channels now act as a powerful platform to inspire compassion, encourage support, and grow their incredible rescue work.
